World Refugee Day

Hundreds of Santa Clara refugee community members came together at the Campbell Community Center on June 14 to celebrate World Refugee Day. The 27th annual event, free and open to the public, included ethnic performances, presentations and activities highlighting the diverse cultures of Santa Clara County’s refugee population. The event “gives people from different cultures the opportunity to represent their countries and know they are welcomed and celebrated,” said Claire Collins, outreach coordinator for refugee foster care at the Catholic Charities of Santa Clara County.

Whimsical, political, historical, personal — murals of many kinds grace downtown San Jose. You’ll find them on walls, utility boxes, doors and any space suitable to become a canvas. The Mosaic photo staff wandered around the streets near our newsroom on the San Jose State University campus, and captured the striking art that caught their attention.

Lyft bikes debut in downtown San Jose

On June 11, Lyft introduced a new line of electric-powered bicycles that it will make available in San Jose.
The bicycles, dubbed Bay Wheels, come with pedal assist for hills. They also include a lock to enable cyclists to safely park away a docking station. Riders can riders can rent the bikes through the Lyft mobile app.
The new fleet replaces electric bikes that Lyft removed last spring because of braking problems.
San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, who took a test spin on one of the bikes, hailed them for benefiting the environment and making bicycling accessible to more people.

Celina, from the radio show "Buenas Tardes con Celina," interviewed Latino/Latina Mosaic students and founder Joe Rodriguez about the future of journalism and the importance of programs like Mosaic that serve to inspire and inform young people who are interested in this profession.
