Applications to the 2025 Mosaic summer workshop are closed.

Mosaic is a unique summer and school-year journalism program for students in the greater San Jose area. We target students with little to no access to journalism programs in their high schools to apply. No prior experience is necessary. The summer program takes place at San Jose State University; the school-year program is an extension of the summer program and serves Mosaic alumni. Join us in cultivating a community of future storytellers.

Program Details

Where and when?

The Mosaic Journalism Workshop will be held at San Jose State University in June. Participants must attend every day of the program.

Who can apply?

Applications for the summer program are open to current high school students. In the past, classes have ranged from 11 to 24 students.

To be considered, students must fill out the application completely, including submitting work samples, be able to attend every session, and have access to a cell phone. Loaner laptops will be available to those who need them. The school-year program is open only to summer alumni.

What does this program entail?

Summer sessions include: identifying news, reporting, interviewing, news writing, shooting photos, opinion writing, podcasting, videography, and using social media to share stories and photos.

During the workshop, students produce a print newspaper with news, features, and sports stories, and photo spreads. PDFs of our annual newspapers appear on our website. Stories, photos, and video links are posted on The Mercury News website. Our podcasts appear on the KALW-FM 91.7 website.

How do I apply?

Applications are closed.  Contact Sharon Noguchi at snoguchinews@gmail.com with any questions.
